What equipment do I need?
To use energyhive's energy management service you need a broadband modem, an energy monitor and a data collector. Currently our service only works with a CurrentCost energy monitor. If you don't have a CurrentCost monitor you can buy one here (with a data cable) or from another web site, shop or your electricity supplier may provide it free. Our data collector can only be provided through energyhive, it is what you connect to your broadband modem to send your household electricity data back to our system.

Do I have to have a broadband connection?
Yes you do, otherwise the service will not work. Important note: You must have one ethernet port available on your modem / modem router.

I already have an energy monitor, do I need to buy a new one?
It depends on whether your energy monitor (also called a Real Time Display) has a data output connection. At the moment we know that CurrentCost monitors work with energyhive. Contact us to ask if your monitor will work with energyhive.

I have a CurrentCost monitor, do I need anything else?
Yes, you need to buy a data collector which collects the data from your monitor and passes it back to our equipment. You also need a data cable to connect from your monitor to the data collector.

Installing the monitor
Follow the instructions that came with your monitor which tell you how to attach a clamp and sensor to your energy source and get the monitor up and running. You do not have to set any of the questions on the monitor about the date, time, tariff etc. as energyhive will manage this on your web browser. If you do want to use the monitor to give you information through the display (as well as via the web), you will need to set the monitor according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

Connecting to the data collector
To connect your data to energyhive, you need to connect the monitor, via the available port, with a cable to the data collector we supplied with your order. Then connect the data collector to your broadband modem. You do not need to have your computer on to connect the monitor to energyhive. Full instructions on setting your equipment up will be shipped with your order and are also available here.

Activate your device with energyhive
When you have connected the monitor, data collector and modem, you can then active your energyhive account. Make sure everything is turned on, then bring up the energyhive web site in your browser. You will need to create an account and register your equipment – instructions will be provided on screen.

What should the lights look like on the data collector?
The lights (LEDs) are illuminated as follows when reading from the left with the data collector in front of you (number them starting from 1 on the left):
LED 4 bottom flashing steadily
LEDs 7 top and bottom ON yellow
LED 12 bottom flickering in sync with the ethernet port on my router

On the graphs my dashboard shows no information
The first thing to do is check the ‘equipment status’ tab on the left of your dashboard. We monitor whether we are receiving data from you and whether your data collector is transmitting and if not we let you know on the screen and suggest what to try next.

I can't login
Is your internet connection working? Check to see that other links on the site are working OK. If you are entering your usual password and username but can't login, please contact us.

Is my data secure?
energyhive takes the security of your data very seriously. We keep the data on secure servers that have no direct access from the internet. Your data is stored anonymously and the only information we have about you, the registered user, is the email address that you used to register and the first part of your post code.
Your email address is only used by us to alert you of specific energy usage events and of functional improvements to the energyhive service; it will never be disclosed to third parties without your express permission.
Your postcode is used to compare geographic energy usage with the prevailing climate conditions in that area. If your energy usage data is used for statistical analysis it is always anonymized.
Any purchase of equipment that you make on the Energyhive website IS NOT correlated with an energyhive account.

Is there a fee for the service?
At the moment we are offering the service for the first year free when you buy equipment from us.

How do I make a suggestion for the service?
We are very happy to receive ideas on new functionality and how we can improve energyhive. Please use our contact us form. Also, if you have a favourite online resource with advice on energy saving, please complete the form on our resources page.

I'm abroad, why does the time seem wrong on the chart?
The charts and information displays are set to the timezone of the computer you are using. So, if you are three time zones away from home, you'll see your local timezone plus (or minus) three. If you want to see what is happening in you home's local time - just change the time settings on the computer you are using.
