More information

This looks like a lot of boxes and cables but they boxes are small (around the size of a modem) and once the system is set-up you won't need to re-set or adjust anything, it can be tucked away out of sight.

Plug image

You need two free plug sockets, one for the monitor and one for the data box.

Cost of the equipment varies, depending on whether you need to buy the full kit, or just the data box if you already have a CurrentCost monitor. Studies show you can save 20% on your electricity bill when you can monitor your actual consumption, real-time. Join now, bring your bills down and do your bit to help the environment.

Important: At this stage the CurrentCost monitor is the only monitor we sell because it meets the following criteria: it is low cost, low power, easy to set up and has the necessary data feed. If you know of other monitors which you would like us to add, please contact us.

How it works

What you need

You will need a Sensor Jaw, a compatible Energy monitor and Data collector box all of which can be purchased through energyhive's secure shop. Alternatively you can use your own equipment as long as it is compatible with our systems, a full list of compatible equipment can be found here: FAQs. You will also need a broadband connection and access to a power supply.

What happens at your end

The sensor jaw connected to your electricity supply sends a signal every 6 seconds to the energy monitor. 1) The sensor jaw connected to your electricity supply is connected to a transmitter which sends a signal every 6 seconds to the energy monitor.
The data collector is connected to the monitor so it also receives the data signal 2) The data collector is connected to the monitor so it also receives the data signal.
The data collector sends the information to a database at energyhive headquarters via your broadband connection 3) The data collector sends the information to your private area on a database at energyhive through your broadband connection.
View the data 4) At energyhive the data is collected and securely stored, allowing members to view (via a web browser) their own energy profile over time and also compare it to groups of other members by profile (see What happens our end below to find out exactly how).

What happens at our end (the geeky bit)

energyhive receives the electricity readings via your unique IP address (that's your broadband address) every six seconds showing the exact amount of electricity that your home is using.

The data is held within a secure environment and anonymously aggregated within your member groups - no-one else will be able to identify your individual electricity consumption profile unless you permit it.

We keep a long history of the data (over two years) to allow you to see patterns of behaviour and thus identify opportunities to reduce your energy consumption.
